The 2.3/2.5 cars are with the 2.8/3.0 cars. They are all 6 cyl. cars, which is what the rule will end up reading. Just like the 1.9, the 2.3/2.5 has no other class to stick them in, and with only 9 stock classes (any more and there isn't any competition, as everyone is spread out too much), they just can't stick them anywhere. Also, not many people race Z3's, so there is no pressure to create a slot for them. They usually figure that serious racers will get the biggest engine available, and that non-serious racers will be competitive enough at the local level. And they are right, of course, as local competition tends to be more about driver then car, and a good driver in a 2.3 wouldn't have any problems beating anyone in AS except the one husband/wife team who has an E36 M3, and they have been known to beat Vettes in SS with it. If an older M3 can beat a new Vette, a 2.3 Z3 can beat any AS car driven by local competition. This is not the only car they do this with.I'd love to move the 1.9 to CS (class, um, 6) and the 2.3/2.5 to BS (class 4), but I don't think that's fair to the other people in that class, so I understand.
Serious BMW racers drive M cars anyway, either M3's or MCoupes, and this reorg is probably going to be a big advantage to the MCoupe. If I had the skill and money, I'd consider one. The SCCA is usually much more interested in optimizing the top level car then the lower levels (there are exceptions, of course, but in general). Why would you race anything else? There is no real way to do this to make all cars exactly equal, so they do the best they can, and understand that national competitors buy cars specifically for autocross because they are competitive in their class. When the car changes classes, they sell their cars and get another competitive car. That's just how the game is played.
