The last 2 months or so have been real intense with project deadlines, family obligations, etc. and I have not participated on the MB for quite a while. In fact, I head out on Friday for a 2 week business trip and wanted to squeeze this request for help in before I leave.
About 9 months ago I swapped out the factory brake pads for EBC GreenStuff's on my Y2K 2.3 and have had great luck with them. During the last month though, I have started to notice exessive vibration/pulsing of the brake pedal and the steering wheel when doing hard braking. My assumption is that the factory rotors have warped somehow. I went into the dealer this morning and the service rep immediately noticed the aftermarket pads and said the rotors would not be covered under warranty. He was very nice and informative, saying that he had seen the same issue with another Z3 just a couple of weeks ago- the owner had not had any problems until quite a few months after installing aftermarket pads. He claims that the factory rotors and pads are both relatively "soft" and are matched to each other. He says that the extra hardness of the EBC pads generates too much heat for the rotors to absorb. So, he suggested that rather than pay the price for the replacement factory rotors and dealer labor, that I look for high performance rotors and install them myself. I appreciated his honesty and now I am sitting here with a couple of questions.
Going with aftermarket rotors seems to make sense, and it seems that I can maybe save some money as well. I am an aggressive street driver, but no track use, I want to keep the cost within reason, and I have moderate mechanical ability.
1. Any suggestions for rotors and where to buy them?
2. Also, I can change the pads easilly, but have never done rotors. How difficult is this to do?
3. Will I need to bleed the lines? I have no experience with this either.
4. Should I be considering putting in steel brake lines at the same time?
Thanks!
