'01 Miata or '97 Z3 - which to get? (archive)

Hi all. I'm looking for some opinions regarding the two vehicles listed. I'm very familiar with the Z3 since I own a '00 2.3. I'm considering purchasing another roadster for the family, though, and want to keep the purchase price down a bit. In the 21K range it would appear you can purchase a used Z3 or a new (base) Miata. Many of you have owned Miatas and many doubtless have opinions on the subject. I've certainly formed a few impressions of my own and hoped I could get some additional insights from my fellow Z3'ers. Looking for thoughts on safety, reliability, fun-to-drive, the whole spectrum.
