The aluminum trim is plastic. It is made from the same plastic and has the same "chrome" finish as the front kidney grilles (those are plastic too by the way). It looks like it is polished somehow after the chome finish is put on. This is how the E46 aluminum trim (which BMW is careful to call "matte chrome" by the way) works. The front side looks like aluminum, the back side looks like the front kidney grilles. It is not painted on (I would guess chemically bonded), it is very durable, and unless someone who knows the truth tells you otherwise, no one would guess it isn't aluminum.Get it. You will like it. It doesn't get very hot in the sun either. You can wax it for better finger print resistance.
