I have always had a Mag-Lite (heavy, water proof, metal, 3D cell flash light) in my cars. With so little extra space I did not want it just handing around in the glove compartment or the trunk. I wanted it within reach. If it is out in the open you run the risk of it being used against you or against your car. So I put it under the dash on the passenger side. It is not in the way.
