Wow, the paint on the hood must be thin.
I've only had my Z3 for 2 months now and there are bug hits and chips all over the hood.

Paint job is going to cost $700+ and I'm going to invest in the new $280 clear coat from BMW.

Anyone else have any stories or advice?

Is the car still under warranty? Have you spoke to the dealer. I know paint is not usually covered under warranty, but you can give it a shot. My 98 Z3 hood is holding up well, it is the front valance that is taking all the chip marks.
