I hit a rock
Z3's and M Roadsters have a 2qty 33lbs weights in the rear bumper. Marketing required it for 50/50 weight distribution, have them removed. The extra weight was about 10lbs of tubular steel. It cost about $2,000 to remove and replace the mechanicals under the car. The welding was about $1500, I paid about $200 extra for the extra work. Unless you have all the pieces removed it is not economical. They used square and round tube. It added about 10LBS, but remember, you can remove the 65lbs of weights BMW puts in your rear bumper so it can have the "50/50" balance.

good luck

How much does it cost for the cross member job? And is there much weight gain from the mod? When you said "tube", is it round tube or square tube?
