Granted, it is moderately dangerous. Certainly you can be injured or killed if you 'lose it' in the wrong spot on the track. Having 'lost it' twice in relatively safe spots on two different tracks I am keenly aware of the probability that given enough laps you will eventually 'lose it'.
Hopefully, I have been lucky enough to learn a few cheap lessons.
I guess the exhiliration of driving at speed on a track in an open car is akin to the thrill of skydiving or bungee jumping or whatever risky behaviour to which some of us are drawn.
I don't know if the statistics are on my side but I certainly feel safer on the track than driving on a narrow two-lane mountain road with a Semi load of Douglas fir closing with me at 100-120 miles per hour.
