I have a '00 M Roadster. Pretty stock, except for the HMS Rollbar (sorry Joe, SportBar) and Schroth harnesses.
The MZ3 (more so than the other Z3s) is a handful and can be quite flighty. I compare that to the E36 M3, which has tenacious grip, and lets you do all sorts of foolish things.
Knowing that the MZ3 is fickle, I rarely run at (I hate the term) "10/10s". Particularly when someone is in the car with me. Yes, I have to swallow my pride when "inferior" cars pass me. That may be the price of not dying.
Even being more cautious, I still have spun the car twice- at Summit (turn 3) where I joined the "270 Club" and at the Glen (turn 9). The stock Dunlops scream like banshees, and I'm always in a huge slip angle. But when the back end goes, there is NO warning- it's irrecoverable.
Keep in mind that if you roll in a gravel trap the A pillars and rollbar aren't going to do a thing- the car will sink, with you in it.
If you're going to seriously track the Z3, get the hardtop. I will install one this winter.
