Here's a good reason:
I washed the car yesterday and while the boot cover was off, I cleaned it with Armorall and several originally white terry cloth towels. The first towel is now a lovely shade of dark grey. The second and third are progressively lighter shades of grey. The fourth is mainly white with some dirtier spots. To loosely quote Irvin M. Fletcher: "There's a tremendous buildup of guck."

Last cleaning of the boot cover was in August. Imagine all of that crud sitting in the top well with the top bouncing gently up and down to grind it in...

Prior to this summer I didn't use the boot cover that much and we collected several blackish smudge marks on the sides of the tan top. They finally mostly disappeared in April through the use of a vast array of chemical fabric and upholstery cleaners. Happily, now at the end of October as another top down season draws near a close, there are no new marks.

That boot cover now goes on every time I plan to spend more than 5 minutes with the top down.

Just my $0.02

I talked to BMWNA re: my top's wear marks. I was told the boot cover was designed to keep the top from vibrating and rubbing on itself there by preventing wear marks. I always use my boot cover. I also have a couple of rags I place in the gap by the front snaps. Those keep a lot of dust out.
