Are these considered "competitor" cars in the US?

At least in the US, BMW enthusiasts seem to be more focused on driving...and view BMWs as having an optimum mix of dynamics, quality, and utility. On the other hand, Benz types appear seem to be more driven by brand consciousness (and the given attributes of MB, quality and great engineering) versus an overall desire to drive. But, Z3 is a bit of a boutique car to some...and the SLK is perceived in much the same light.
