In southern Europe at least, you can have a basic Z3 1.8 for much less of an SLK. The average person on the street views both cars as in the same category (convertibles) - both luxury items but the Z3 "cheaper" and the SLK "exclusive" (don't get me wrong).
I have friends with both brands. Some Z3 owners prefer the BMW image (a tru-er sports car) and "despise" the SLK (a show-off car) but others bought the Z3 simply because they couldn't afford the SLK. On the other hand, some SLK owners have secret fears down their hearts that some Z3 will easily smoke them one day!!

PS1 Other convertibles don't get easily into the picture unless these are german (not to say there may be better Japanese/british cars!)
PS2 This is not a flame-bait: just some idle socio-economic small talk :-) !!!
