This is not some new age question? So let me explain. When I first got my last Z3, the car was surrounded by mystique and I just thought it was the end all be all of sports cars- I mean right up there with Ferrari. Now, three years later, my old Z3 since returned for reliability problems and I am leasing my new Z3 2.3. I have read tons of articles and driven the mystique right out of the car. Now, unfortunately, when I look at the car I see a beautiful looking car, but have reservations about whether it qualifies as a true "performance car" ala Viper, Ferrari, 911, Y2K MR2 etc, or a "sporty car" ala SLK, Boxster (not S), or Audi TT. Understand this question to not be one about ultimate performance numbers, but about purpose. In your opinions is the Z3 a real performance car that just happens to also be beautiful, or a beautiful car, which can hold its own. I can't figure it out. For example, I definately consider the M Coupe a performance car because it has a clear purpose, while the Audi TT, IMO is a looker, which is supposed to make people think it can also perform. Essentially, do you think the Z3 Roadsters looks make promises that the mechanicals cant keep?

At the end of the day Joe its gotta be subjective. Your boxes vs others in this thread show that. I personally wouldnt put that cartoon car Viper nor the Lotus home made toy in the same universe as Ferrari or Porsche - but thats me. I just know that having traded my old z3 on a new 911 (a real Porshe not a Boxter econobox) that I missed my z for a year. It made me smile, I could drive literally 100s of miles with no fatigue, I always felt comfortable, all the controls fell easy to hand and always worked, the car always worked. In fact the only problem I had was a leaky roof - big deal since I hardly ever used it- which BMW fixed. The Porsche was faster, but there was not enough in it to justify the satisfaction factor. So I ended up a couple of months ago trading the 911 back on an MZ3 and havent stopped smiling since. The 911 was in my garage 3/4 of the time, the ///M hardly sees the garage. I guess I'm saying its personal. External validation wont help. If its jazzin you it doesnt matter what box you or your peers put it in.
