I'm seriously looking into purchasing a new Z3 3.0. I am one of those that like to keep a car a long time...8-10 years. Lately though I've been somewhat apprehensive after reading several problem areas with the Z3. Seems that the Z3's Achilles heel is it's rag top. It looks like several owners have needed to get their tops replaced due to leaks and other troulble areas.

I bought a '98 2.8, delivered in March of '98. In that time, the only top-related problem I've had is the window pulling out of the rubber seal in a small area in the right rear (about 0.5" worth). It was fixed under warranty, as it happened after 2.5 years.

It probably would have cost <$80 to have the dealer "fix" this problem out of warranty, as it only involved pulling the window out and gluing inside the seal. I might have tried on my own, depending on what they quoted.

Overall, I would say that the top isn't that big of a problem to not buy the car.
