The upgrade started to take effect in 8/99. BMW started to power their HK subwoofer with an additional amp. It sounds ALOT better than the solo amp setup I was equiped with. I hope this helps.

Brian, my 2000 MZ3 (11/99 production date) has two amps, one on the left, and one on the right. Do the pre-6/99 models only have one amp? From your post, I take it that I must have the upgraded system. Thanks in advance for the clarifications.

Most of the complaints are coming form pre 8/99 production cars. In 8/99 they upgraded the HK system with different speakers, subwoofer, and they added an amp to power the better subwoofer. My M roadster unfortunatly was built 6/99, so I am stuck with the inferior system. Oh, well--I still LOVE the car.

Question on sound system...I am baffled on this and would like some feedback...I have a 2000 2.8 with in dash cd changer (bmw business model) and teh rest Harmon Kardon...
I have read posts here and in other places about how TERRIBLE the stereo is...I am baffled at this...Is it me or what?
Mine sounds GREAT...Far better by a factor of 5 or 6 times than anyting I have ever heard in a car...particularly CD player...
That is why I am curious what gives...

Is it possible that in 2000 models they got their act together or what?
Just curious...
