What the hell is a Z1???!!!???? (archive)

Saw a convertible BMW today. Looked like a Fiat/Z3. It didn't have any doors, just cut outs like a jeep. I asked the driver what the car was and he remarks "Z1, they don't sell them in this country and very few were made." The car was in excellent condition (visually) and the driver said it was a 1991.

Was this guy pulling my chain or is there really a Z1 in production for other markets than the US???
