Which do you think pollutes less per mile, per gallon of fuel consumed, per any metric you want to try:, my '86 VW Golf POS, my '98 Accord 4-cyl, or my 00 2.3? Per volume of fuel consumed, it's probably a toss-up between the Z3 and the Accord. On a per mile basis, no doubt it's the Accord. The Golf loses on all counts.
Sure, the same number of carbon and hydrogen atoms that go into the cylinder as fuel have to come out in the exhaust, but how they combine with oxygen and nitrogen from the air goes a loooooong way toward determining how nasty the end products are.
... But the new engine makes 5 lb-ft less torque. Not a great trade off. Official 0-60 times improved by 0.1 seconds. The changes were actually made to "improve" emissions. Funny how educated people think you can reduce emissions without changing fuels. What goes in, must come out....
