Downshift to use the engine as a brake is dangerous stuff, it wears the tranny, could end up over reving the engine and is a poor way to balance a car in a turn.

Besides, brake pads are cheaper. The reason they dust so much is that european countries require a certain amount of carbon in all pads used on the street. I do not know why. We do not have that problem, so get some metal masters/ performance friction brake pads and you will not have the dust problem any more.
