That's really interesting, because I remember now that the service advisor mentioned the stock pads and rotors as being relatively "soft" and that they were somehow matched to each other. He then gave me a line about how the Green pads weren't as "soft" as the OEM's and possibly caused the warpage in the rotors. Honestly, I had no idea what he was talking about at the time and figured it to be a standard case of mumbo-jumbo doublespeak. He was pretty adamant that the factory would not cover the rotors with aftermarket pads installed and he openly admitted to me that aftermarket rotors would be the most sensible way to go. It didn't seem I would get anywhere with him and I left it at that.

I'm curious whether this rotor replacement policy you mention is actually documented in a TSB or not. Admittedly, its a little late for me to do anything about it, but I would love to shove the TSB under my service manager's nose the next time I go in for scheduled service. HMS gave me exceptional customer service and sold me the cryo-rotors at-cost. In the end, I'm happy knowing that I now have rotors installed that will take a licking and keep on ticking.

My wife's 323i developed a 'rotor shimy' at about 4500mi. The dealer replaced them w/o question. She noticed that the new brakes didn't grab as quickly as the originals. I went and asked the service manager about this. He said that BMW put softer rotors and pads than they should have for the US market. It seems Europeans don't mind the shimy if they get great braking - or so he said. BMW knows that the rotor/pad set up is prone to do this and advised the use a different set up when replacing them hence the difference in the brake feel.

This problem is also present in the Z3s. I do not think that the new pads made a whole bunch of difference in whether your rotors would have warped or not based on this knowledge. If your happy then so be it but I think you bought an unneccessary set of rotors. Especially if they upgraded your rotors to a different part number than the OEM rotor. Maybe worth checking.
