Sulfur is a very small (though admittedly non-negligible) part of the air pollution problems caused by automobiles. The main ingredients in urban smog are un- or partially burned fuel molecules and oxides of nitrogen (N2 oxidized to NO and NO2 at high temperature in the cylinder). Take these two ingredients, "cook" properly in the atmosphere with lots of sunlight and, voila: you get ozone and nasty little particles both of which can at the best irritate the eyes, nose and throat and at worst are REALLY bad for you.

Fuel and nitrogen oxide emissions from vehicles are strongly related to the combustion conditions and pollution control measures. Some studies have indicated that one 10 year old car with a bad cat converter can pollute more than several dozen brand new cars with up-to-date and properly operating control measures.

That's all I'm saying. Changing a sulphur compound that we think causes problems for the environment to another compound that we will decide later causes problems for the environment is not a solution. It's just a coverup. Removing the sulphur from the gasoline is a much better solution. Fortunately, that's what we're finally doing.
