I drive a `98 2.8 Z3 as my year round car. Last winter I purchased a n32 2000 528iT for my wife. We live in southern Ohio and spend a bunch of time in northern Michigan. We've already got over 26K on the wagon (she ordered it with a stick and the sports package) and have driven it in EVERY kind of weather. In winter we use a full set of snow tires.

I wouldn't trade the 5 for an Audi, even if you tossed in a TT Coupe. I've driven A4 and A6 Quattros. Both nice cars but when it comes to stability while moving (not just the jump full-wheel drive gives you) you can't beat the BMW system. I've slid the A6 (sedan) in not too much snow/ice. I then covered the same territory in the 528iT no problem.

My daughter owns a `91 325ix which is also great in the snow but it doesn't handle as well at the 528iT overall (big surprise). There is also a great difference in the full-wheel drive systems used by Audi and the new BMW xi series. You would do well to look for a slightly used 528 or see if your dealer would loan you a 3xi to give your father a ride.

To start with, I am NOT selling my M Roadster. It still too much fun to be legal. But I am getting close to picking up an Audi Quatro A6 for my "goin'-to-work" car. Does anyone have experience/knowledge either pro or con the A6? My concern is regarding reliability, cost of ownership (vs say a Lexus or Acura)and service in the U.S. Thanks in advance.
Roger S.
