I wouldn't trade the 5 for an Audi, even if you tossed in a TT Coupe. I've driven A4 and A6 Quattros. Both nice cars but when it comes to stability while moving (not just the jump full-wheel drive gives you) you can't beat the BMW system. I've slid the A6 (sedan) in not too much snow/ice. I then covered the same territory in the 528iT — no problem.
My daughter owns a `91 325ix which is also great in the snow but it doesn't handle as well at the 528iT overall (big surprise). There is also a great difference in the full-wheel drive systems used by Audi and the new BMW xi series. You would do well to look for a slightly used 528 or see if your dealer would loan you a 3xi to give your father a ride.
To start with, I am NOT selling my M Roadster. It still too much fun to be legal. But I am getting close to picking up an Audi Quatro A6 for my "goin'-to-work" car. Does anyone have experience/knowledge either pro or con the A6? My concern is regarding reliability, cost of ownership (vs say a Lexus or Acura)and service in the U.S. Thanks in advance.
