Not sure about rough start problems with a 1.9. I can't imagine the dealer would use low octane gas in the car. Also, the car would lose power on low octane gas, but shouldn't run rough. Hopefully someone else will be able to help with this symptom.

The brightness of the dash display is controlled by a small light sensor at the end of the miles per hour readout on the speedometer. In other words, follow the numbers from zero through the end of the speedometer. Just past the last number, you will see a small round dot. That dot measures how light it is. The computer then adjusts the brightness of the dash as appropriate (lighter at night and brighter during the day). But this adjustment should be made for the dash as a whole, not just the odomoter. Anyway, you may want to check that sensor to make sure it is unobstructed, etc.
