To sort of seal out environmental guck. Mine gave a horrid acrid burning smell for the first two weeks. Yummy.

I saw the same thing in my M. It can be scraped off with a fingernail or plastic scraper. I asked my dealer about it and was told it was a coating applied at the factory to the motor, for what purpose I can't recall, and that it usually burns off in the first 100 or so miles. Unless it is oversprayed to an area that doesn't heat up, like the strut towers and intake manifold.

Y2K 2.3 - when i was looking for alarm horn connection i saw these hideous oil drips from between the strut tower mounting and wheel well(engine comp side) its dry but how come both sides has it at first I thought it a crack but when i tried to feel it its a dried oil really fugly.
ANYBODY HAS AN IDEA WHAT IS IT should I be concern Please help "Sleepless in LA"
