By that I mean that I was on active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 6/9/65 through 9/8/70 but never saw service in Viet Nam. In boot camp at Parris Island I requested assignment to a combat unit but the Marine Corps decided that they needed me elsewhere. I was assigned to a Data Processing unit at Camp Lejeune where I was later selected as one of the first 42 Marines to be sent to formal COBOL programmer training. I had orders to Viet Nam in 1969 but got rerouted to Okinawa where I spent my entire Overseas tour. In retrospect I feel really lucky but I have always had a tinge of guilt for being safe and comfortable in an air-conditioned computer room in Okinawa while so many good men and women were in harms way 'In Country'. I console myself with the fact that I joined the Marine Corps and put my butt on the line. The Marine Corps decided they needed me elsewhere.
