I was one of the long haired protesters trying to get you out of Viet Nam. I was maced, tear gassed, and saw the wrong end of a police baton. I was supportive of the war thru out high school, as my community was very hawkish. It was when I went to college, and talked with others, of a different point of view, the most powerful being those that had been there, that I saw the light. The US had no intention of every "winning" the war. They were sending young men to die just to hold the line. I don't even, want to get into the economics of the war. I'm sorry, but I see this as a great loss of life for nil. There were many acts of bravery beyond the call, and my heart went out, and still goes out to all that went and fought. But the bottom line is, you were lied to, and the American public was lied to. As far as I am conserned, I believed then, as I still do now, that I was trying to save the lives people serving, and being prepared to serve.
Would I have gone and fought if called? My number was 365 so I never had to make that decision. I will not apolgize for what I did during the conflict. I would do the same again if I had to. It is NOT a badge of shame to try and save the lives of your fellow human beings.

ps A good book to read... "Hell No We Won't Go" by Sherry Gershon Gottlieb May give some insight to those that don't understand my point of view.
