After a couple rides in my '00 M, a friend at work decided to trade in his beemer for a 996 coupe (I think his wife was also happier for him not to be riding the bike to work every day). Since we were both at work really early yesterday, we decided to leave around 4:30 to miss some of the traffic and take the long way back to our homes in the city (SF). Nothing insane, or that would get us 2 points with DMV, but rather some moderately spirited driving on the more twisty and scenic roads in the Bay area, including Skyline Drive, Rt. 1, the Great Highway along Ocean Beach, and the twisty little roads through the Presidio. I'm not sure whether who was happier - I envied his extra 50 horsepower, and I just love the mechanical whine of that Porsche engine, but he sure envied my 360 degree top down view as we were cruising along Ocean Beach at sunset. We pulled off the road and parked across from the Beach Chalet just as the last of the sun was dipping under the edge of the ocean. As we pulled into the lot we turned and gave each other huge grins, and laughed incredulously at our good fortune - for living in such a beautiful place, and for being able to afford the privilege of driving such great cars.
