Nothing to do with the military... (archive)

Squids (origin uncertain) are young guys riding muscle bikes sportbikes, especially the helmetless and totally unskilled type that ride in a very stupid manner on public roads and probably cause more ill will toward motorcyclists in general than even the so-called 1%ers (outlaw types).

Necks is just a shortened version of redneck and of course there are varying opinions as to what constitutes one of those with the only completely erroneous ones being those that tie rednecks to certain geographical regions esp the South. They live everywhere and even foreign countries have their own versions of them!

I didn't see the context under which this reference was made but these sound like the names my Dad (USN) & his buddies used to called Marines. Here a few I recall:

Marines:

Gyrenes
Necks
Squids
Jarheads

Navy:

Swabbies
Deck Apes
Anchor Clankers
Rust Pickers

Note that I'm NOT endorsing any kind of disrespect for members of either service, they both do an excellent job. Even my Dad admits that. When the USS Cole was attacked in the harbor at Yemen, my Dad said that the Marines on the warships he served on would have NEVER permitted any unidentified or uncleared local personnel that close to the ship. They would have torn them up just for practice.
