Stephen,

I can't help you with your pricing question, however, I will touch briefly on your other questions.

The '96 was the first year of production. There were some idiosynchracies with these models as well as the current ones. Overall, the Z3 rates pretty high on quality. I can tell you the factory is worldclass.

I would pay more attention to the overall condition of the car. Anything that may have been a problem surely was fixed by the original owner. I can tell you most of the problems are simply cosmetic or fall on the 'need for perfection' of most owners.

There are stories here of people with about 150k on the clock and still going strong. The 1.9 is a proven engine. If it all looks good and the price is right, I'd be very comfortable buying this car.

An idea, if you are not buying this from a dealer, you may want to have it checked out by one for the peace of mind. I know MegaDealer in Nashville will do this for $80. If you don't go this route, make sure you fully inspect the top. This is not an inexpensive replacement.

Good luck,

John B.
July '97 build 2.8 (only problems were Speed Sensitive Volume not hooked up, a broken door clip, and driver seat rail replaced due to movement. Condition today equals flawless)
