...I notice that there is kind of protective skeleton of black metal tubing under the front of the car protecting the drip pan and the transmission.
I think that I hit this protective cage or perhaps the two I-beams behind the cage that seem to be the car's frame.
Any opinions?

and check for oil leaks and steering control parts that may be bent. Don't take a chance , losing your $500 deductable may save you a lot a trouble. If you lose your deductable replace everything that even looks like its not new.
