What fuel will get you max advance will vary depending upon the atmospheric conditions and from car to car. Max advance on a stock MZ3 looks like it is around 24 degrees BTDC near redline @WOT. I've seen the same engine Sharked (further advanced) not knock on 93 (I think) octane fuel. So on that engine on that day the 93 octane was more then needed for the stock maps.

The flipside of course is I've seen my own engine retard timing (knock) on 94 octane at the top of third gear when my mixture wasn't quite right with the supercharger.
