I don't think the coldness is THE problem. I tried topdown in 50's, with windows up, heated seats and heat blasting, I really wasn't that cold. I am 6'1", so I do feel the wind blowing my forehead but that's not killing anyone. So I can see for a shorter person, it's not cold to do topdown.

Now to be perfectly honest, the main reason I don't like to go topdown in cold days, is because I think it's silly.
In some part of the country where Z3 is rare, I am sure people will be admiring your car when you pass by, not to worry about why the top is down in 40's. However here in NY, Z3 is like a dime a dozen, same goes for SLK, Boxster, Miata and other droptops, you see them everywhere in summer with top down, most stay in garage in winter and some are still out there with top up, so the usually comment when people see a topdown roadster, is, "look he think he is cool, what a dumbass".

In another words, it's like wearing a fur in summer to show it off. I don't think that's cool.
