Thest are small 'ridges INSIDE the groves of the tread. As the tire wears down these 'ridges come closer to the outside.

When the wear bars are even with the outside of the tread, the tire is no longer DOT approved and de cops can write you up without any fancy measuring devices.

Look for the wear bars and you will find them, I bet.
