when do I need to replace the tires? (archive)

I got 51K on my 96 1.9, when I looked at
the stock dunlop 16/50 tires, it still looks
like in good condition, however, it slip several
times in the rain recently. I am not sure if
it is the tire's problem or some other problem.
it runs fine on dry road, however, whenever it rains
it feel unsafe, is this the tire property of the
original Dunlop or tire is worned?
How can I tell a tire is worned? it still have
deep gaps and textures.
