the actual fine for the violation is relatively cheap,
none of my figures are exact, as I dont work for the CHP or traffic court.
but for example, a left turn or failing to obey a sign may cost $35, then the court adds a "penalty assesment of 170% of the fine on top of that. bringing the $35 fine to $94.50.
I dont know how the speed fines work , but there is a slight scale for increased speeds.
the only killers are carpool and now red lights. these carry a mandatory fine of $100, add the P/A of 170 and you are looking at $270.
an old good one was "no proof of insurance" used to total $1351. but the judges would regularly waive the fine if the driver came back in 30 days with insurance.
So the state made that a mandatory fine of 100 bucks as well, that way the judge cannot reduce it and the state collects the bill.
By the way, the cities that issue the ticket only collect about 10% of the FINE. all of the P/A goes to the courts.
So cities dont make much on traffic cites... however the whole amount of a parking ticket does go to the issuing city
whew...
