that company does have competition, plenty of it, and there are people who walk out of Harley showrooms and promptly buy a Japanese cruiser when smugly quoted the take-it-or-leave gouge prices some dealers extract. I've known some. OTOH the majority of their new customers *are* gained from the ranks of import bike owners (though not necessarily because of magazine ads of course). HD execs do remember the days when foreign competition was such that they had to lobby for a stiff tariff on imported bikes to survive. They target their marketing dollars toward image in hopes those days will never return, IF they can *keep* that image and loyal base which AMF ownership came close to destroying forever.
