warning light of course, but it seems technically feasible so I can understand how somebody might think it isn't a joke. Now that tires are being built with colored treads, the color could be embedded at a certain depth and detected by optical sensors when wear reached a certain point. But nobody's built such a contraption afaik, so maybe it's not quite that easy to make it reliable.
