As you say, almost anything is possible. However, some are much more likely than others. The idea of tires having full grooves and tread after 51k miles on a sports car is positively amazing to me. Particularly on the rear wheels.

If the tires look substantially as they do when new, then wear sensors are not helpful. In that case, perhaps the tire-wear equivalent of the butt dyno is needed. If the car feels squirrelly on very old tires...that oughtta be enough of a clue, without having to see cords!

If an optical tire wear sensor is a long shot, think how problematic it is to design a driver common sense sensor. (And even more difficult for Alan to write the code for a reliable Message Board BS meter.) (O:}
