Handling with ASC off (Duh)! (archive)

This is probably going to sound really obvious to those who frequently autocross their cars, but I almost always drive my M with the ASC on, since - to be frank - I'm still learning the limits of the car and have a healthy respect for its power. I've noticed that when I drive twisty roads hard (i.e. to the point where ASC engages), the car's handling is a little disappointing, inasmuch as I can't deliberately induce throttle oversteer to the extent that I can in some other cars without stability control. So the other day, just for fun, I took it up rt. 1 between Mill Valley and where it is closed off just before Stinson Beach, and turned off ASC. Voila - the car was much more responsive and fun to drive, and I felt like I was able to take the turns significantly faster than with it on.

So my question is - given a certain degree of skill behind the wheel (which I would say that I may not yet have) - is one better off driving with ASC off, or does it occasionally save the butt of even very expert drivers?
