as you've discovered, the car is more fun with the traction control OFF, but for everyday driving, it's probably safer to leave it on, especially if this is your first bmw.
when you find a fun twisty road, and are very focused on the drive, you can take it off and have more fun. BUT, remember, with it off, only you can save yourself from going over the limit... which can happen, leading to spin or some other unintended maneuver.
if you ever autocross it, by all means, turn it OFF.
