As Vidterry suggested I placed my left hand on the front outside edge of the top and pressed lightly towards the center of the car. Viola! It works like a charm. The problem was latteral misalignment not fore/aft misalignment.

There is just the slightest bit of flex to the top. On my 2.3, both sides mated up exactly, and minimal force was necessary.

On the ///M Roadster, like in your situation, the passenger side matches just fine, but the driver side would take significant force -- and I mean literally FORCE -- to get closed.

I found that when I get the top closed, and need to latch the driver's side, if I PUSH the handle toward the center of the car...only slight bit of lateral movement needed, the parts mate exactly, and close with no force. Just a little experimenting may help.
