I was going to post this exact question. Drove Elena's car ('99 2.3) yesterday and noted the check engine light. She'd had one previously, I tightened the gas cap, she swears it went away. Yesterday it was back, and the cap was loose. I filled the tank, then made half a dozen starts before getting back home. Some were places separated by a mile or so, some were 15 miles apart. Check engine light was still on last night.

Is it more than the number of starts? Are there conditions that have to be satisfied before the OBDII system will run the check? Or do I need to bring it in and have the dealer pull codes?
