But that's not the payoff - about 5:30 AM the electricity went off.... followed shortly by the basement water alarm. Aw shucks, Rose & I went down there, and the stupid "Worlds Biggest UPS" I paid $2K for to run the sump pumps in just exaclty this kind of situation was putting out zip, zero, nada, bupkis. Aw damn it! A quick check of the 2 huge deep discharge batteries revealed they were fine, the inverter must have blown out. Damn all this electronic crap anyway!
Two minutes later the flooding began. Rose & I spent the next 2 hours hauling her computer etc. out of the basement. Man there was a lot of stuff down there, you don't realize until you have to carry it up the stairs!
So anyway we got about 3 inches of water, still no electricity so at 8 AM Rose went to the Sears store down the street to buy their LAST generator. She got in home, I put oil & gas in it & fired it up. It ran the pumps just fine... for 10 minutes till the power came back on. Doh - $800 for that thing. Well I have one now, I meant to buy one cheap from some Y2K fanatic this summer but never got around to it.
So we got a cleanup crew to come out, the rugs are ruined but other than a drum set and a few power strips that's it. I figure about $5 K worth of damage.
Thanks for letting me vent guys, now wait till I talk to the guy who sold me the UPS tomorrow...
Stay safe!

that just came across the tv screen, for the local area, is WORSE than anything so far!!!
Beginning after dark, heavy snow...up to nine inches before sunrise. Winds above 30 mph, temperature well below zero...wind chill factor -50 or COLDER. Blowing and drifting snow, blizzard conditions. Travel NOT recommended.
Locally, the snowplows are pulled off of the streets until the winds go down. Jeesh!
This is more bad winter weather than we have had the last two years. It is not unusual for us in the heartland to NOT have a white Christmas...and to not have had snow accumulation by Christmas. This approaches disaster proportions, and it is not even New Years yet, when the bad weather usually starts.
When I decided not to order snow tires, I did not realize I was so seriously offending the weather gods! Sorry.
