I am happy to have heard the rumor refuted, as I said I didn't want there to be truth in it.
Thanks you your posts.
Yes, I think you're right in that the current 3.2L engine is a bored out 2.8L, but it still has 3.2 liters displacement. I think the new engine will have 3.4L (maybe a bored out 3.0L ?). Also, it's been my experience that BMW NA is not always up to speed with what's happening at BMW manuf. They are two separate groups. Do you have any sources at the plant you can double check with ?
I'm like you, no flames intended, just looking for the truth.
Tom
Yes, he is in management. Actually works from BMW NA in New Jersey. (He's from upstate SC, that is our association).
I think you are mis-informed on the engine. I am a 2000 M Owner. The 3.2L M Roadster engine is actually just the 2.8L with a modified bore and stroke. The proposed 2001 MZ3 is/was(I hope is!) a 'true' 3.2L power plant and the same engine (sans a few necessary mods) now going into the new 2001 M3. Hey I'm not trying to flame you here...I don't want this to be true but my source is sound enough.
First of all, test models of the new roadster have been built, so I know they're under test. The production capacity "reason" is bull, because the Spartanburg plant has excess capacity now for the Z3 line. Your friend might be talking about engine capacity, however. Also, the plant in spartanburg is slated for expansion, but most likely for the X5. And another thing, I think the new M roadster will have a 3.4L engine, not a 3.2L. The current M roadster, with the 3.2L. has been "killed". Maybe that's what your friend was talking about. I realize you can't reveal your sources, but can you give us more info about what your friend actually does ? Is he in management ?
