Curious, when did greeting switch to waving?(more) (archive)

When I first started driving BMWs, the greeting was flashing the lights. Didn't have a BMW for a few years and after rejoining the family the greeting seems to have switched from flashing lights to waving. I can tell when I meet an oldie like myself since they still flash. I'm just curious if anyone knows when and/or why the greeting changed.
