This is the route I went a few of years ago. If you are at all handy and enjoy doing this sort of thing you can make a prototype out of light cardboard and then have a sheetmetal shop bend you one out of aluminum. It is very straightforward - requiring only alot of trial and error with the prototype fit. The whole thing including the K&N and a BMW OEM rubber seal to seal the top of the unit against the hood should cost less than $100. It looks very cool and it seems to work very well. I did not want to destroy my factory airbox or I would have gone with Shawn's mods - a very good choice for most.
