You mean attaching the hose to the heat shield somehow? If so you would be letting unfiltered air into the smog pump which can't be a good idea. You might be able to use a small crankcase breather type of filter on the smog pump but I don't know how well that would work. I think the smog pump pumps a fair amount of air when it is running, probably more then what that type of filter is really built for.

The smog pump has a fair amount of intake noise. On my brothers 318ti ('98) it is pretty obvious when it kicks in and that is with it still attached to the airbox.
