My guess is that most BMW dealer's service manager could also test the shocks.

The reason I think driving the car is best is because each Z3 shock is stabilizing about 800 pounds. Just pushing down on a car corner will tell a little, but one person can't put enough instant force on a shock this way to force it to its limits. The G forces each car corner puts on a shock is much more than a person can do.

Of course, if I was an 800-pound gorilla.....
