Autocrossing really chews up your tires, particularly if you are overdriving them as most novice drivers do. The condition described below can also be a nasty side effect as unshaved street tires can "chunk" rubber off the outer edges leaving a cupping on the tread surface adjacent to the siping. Tires feel out of balance.Shaved DOT comp tires actually can wear better even though they are a softer compound, not to mention the fact that they are WAY faster than any street rubber you've ever driven on. I'm not saying this to discourage you in any way.I would say go do it! You will learn a tremendous amount about car control and it is a blast. I used to be a very avid autocrosser - 20+ events in three or more regions. When I was serious I would never dream of autocrossing using a street tire. I did one event last year just for fun and my Gforce kd's were fine - although not like a good autocross tire. I would say just do one event on your street tires using adequate pressures. Look for a novice school at your local club if possible. If you really like it save your expensive street tires and get some dedicated autocross tires at about half the price.
