You should see the dust coming of tires when running on concrete. If you are working a turn as a course worker and if the wind is blowing in the right direction, your legs will have light black dusting of rubber on it by the end of the session.

You are right about the cost of running, but as far as the competition is concerned, its all relative. The SS cars have bigger motors, wider tires etc, but in the end its always the drivers. G stock will be slower but just as competitive as SS. I have competed in AS, FS and now CSP, where my competition has been and are National and Divisional champions, so I learn what I can from them to beat them....some day.
With regards to learing, I suggest you enroll in one of the 2001 Mckamey/Evolution auto-x schools and take a 2 day (phase 1 & 2)program for $500 plus one set of relatively new tires. You learn in one weekend from National Champions what it would take 2-3 seasons to learn driving by yourself. The weekend is good for a total of 60-70 runs on a variety of courses. This school was worth 3-5 seconds at an autocross and the fun is immense.
