observation z3 vs 328i (archive)

took my 00 2.8 z3 in for inspection and some other things and got a 328i as a loner for the day...
I was shocked at how little there is in common with the z3...
I had thought that with the same chassis as a z3 it could possibly handle in the same ballpark etc...
I found it Mushy (was a 4 seater) and had automatic (steptronic) shifter ...
lot of nice gadgets but had thought that it would be more like z3...
Can anyone say if any of the other BMWs handle in the same ballpark? (possibly m3) (obviously z8) but I found myself in almost a cadillac or a station wagon/suv...very shocked...
